George Smith is the winner of the 'under 30' category in the NZ Harp Duo Composition Competition 2017, for his composition titled 'Lady of the Lake'.
George writes: "Lady of the Lake is a harp duo piece that was inspired from the Arthurian legend when a ghostly and mysterious lady emerged from a lake to give King Arthur his legendary sword Excalibur. The imagery of King Arthur encountering a ghostly and mysterious figure inspired
me to write this piece. The imagery of the Lady of the Lake, as well asthe encounter itself and the feelings surrounding greatly inspired the piece. The way other composers like Debussy (in his Nocturnes especially) and Holst (in his Neptune Planet Suite) created an eerie and mysterious atmosphere inspired me greatly when writing the music
as well."
